Art's Bar & Grill couldn't count itself as being in the blogging game without saying something about the John Edwards affair.
Though I was a Hillary Clinton supporter, John Edwards impressed the hell out of me with a New Hampshire rally I saw on CSPAN.
He talked with passion about the case of Natalie Sarkisian, a teenage cancer patient who died because, her family says, their healthcare provider refused to pay for her treatments right up until the last hours of her life. They had a glowing opinion of Edwards and the support he had given them.
To his credit, the guy is the son of mill workers who became a powerhouse attorney and influential world figure (
Bilderberg Group) through pure talent and energy. He also managed to reach the age of 55 with a flat stomach and full head of bouncy, youthful hair, looking so glossy and photogenic that Ann Coulter used an extremely dated reference and called him "the Breck girl."
Despite this, I had read enough psychology to know there had to be more to John Edwards than met the eye. The hair, the abs and winning smile were what tipped me off. This is a man very into appearances. He's got to look good, and everything around him has got to look good, including his family life. Also, all of his accomplishments -- the stellar law career, the political prominence and the preservation of youthful good looks -- were only achievable through extreme self-focus.
Riding shotgun was his now-humiliated wife, Elizabeth. She likewise impressed the hell out of me during his first presidential run when she was speaking to a small group of women in someone's home on CSPAN. Like Bill Clinton, she was extremely well-read on happenings in every part of the world, and could speak on subjects that were way over your head in a way that fascinated you. In hindsight maybe she should've dumped John a long time ago and ran for president against Hillary -- she would've kicked her ass!
So why would a bright light from a well-to-do family like Elizabeth Edwards give up her own career and risk public humiliation to guard the honor of her cheating, mill-worker's-son husband? My theory was that as a possibly-plump young girl, maybe having the attention of this guy that looked like Remington Steele blew her mind, and she was so grateful to have his attention that she was wrapped his finger early on. Narcissistic people are often flypaper for those with low self-esteem, and the low self-esteem people try to find their sense of worth by following in the wake of the narcissist. This is the dynamic of cult leaders like Jim Jones and many others.
In the
Huffington Post,
Bonnie Fuller adds the interesting notion that Elizabeth had so much of her own life invested in his success that she couldn't let a bump in the road like this jeopardize everything else. His success was her success.
So we find out John Edwards isn't the swell guy we had thought. As it turns out he's just another politician. At least he wasn't tapping his foot at men in the restroom like Larry Craig, he was banging females at the Beverly Hills Hilton. Now that's class.
