Beer Drinkers and Belgian Waffle-Makers*

Is Belgian beer worth a crap? Beer lovers better hope so, because soon the makers of Belgian waffles may be the manufacturers of America's number one beer.

A Belgian company called Inbev has made a bid to buy Anheuser-Busch of St. Louis. This isn't because Anheuser is floundering; the company owns a 48.5 percent share of all American beer sales. The unsolicited takeover bid has weight because Belgium's currency is now worth more than the weak American dollar.

I'm not even a beer drinker and I hate to hear this because of what it says about the state of America. "Some guy sitting behind a desk in Washington has nothing to do with my ability to thrive!," many Bush fans like to say, trying to convince themselves their president's ineptitude has no actual bearing on their lives. Do you think some guy sitting behind a desk in Washington has anything to do with the fact your dollar is now worth less than the currency of some teeny, non-superpower like Belgium? Does he have anything to do with the fact Belgium could snap up a 130-year-old American institution like Anheuser as if it were on blue light special at K-Mart? I think he might have something to do with it. And I sure don't recall the dollar being this weak when Bill Clinton was president. The dollar was as strong as Bill's erection for chubby interns.

Switching to Miller won't work, either. Miller is already owned by a British company called South African Brewers! In fact in following up on this factoid I ran across some sites that say Miller's foreign ownership donates money to immigration causes, some of whom have been behind demonstrations held by illegal aliens in the United States. Could be true. If it is...geez.

Pabst Blue Ribbon was popular with my beer-drinking neighbors when I was growing up. It's a known favorite of blue collar good ol' boys. Has Pabst done anything that might make the good ol' boys and Lou Dobbs angry? I'm scared to even look.

Aw, forget it. Let's just go get drunk.

* The title is a play on the song "Beer Drinkers and Hell Raisers" by ZZ Top.

"The dollar was as strong as Bill's erection for chubby interns".

Now that's what I like! And it has the advantage of being true too! The dollar's value has been almost halved since Bill left office. Cheers, 'VJ'

Republican Congress. Return to power in '94. Clinton had a good team there, before Monica became Secretary of Domestic Affairs.

Democratic gains now in the Pelosi era ? Not so good. Gas up. Dollar down.

Yeah, I love it! Check out your evil twin, Joe! VJ, meet VN! "Things were good because the Republicans had taken over congress. They're bad now because of Nancy Pelosi." I knew this was the rewrite of history we were in for!

Democrats have held the White House for just 12 of the past forty years. Republicans had control of congress from `94 to 2006. And yet it's all the fault of Nancy Pelosi! What a laugh! YOUR PRESIDENT SUCKS! COPE!

You're welcome! They have:

1.) NOT let energy companies write our national energy policy in closed-door meetings like...someone.

2.) They have NOT given no-bid contracts to the company the Vice President was the former CEO of like...someone.

3.) They have NOT skipped their congressional hearing like...someone.

4.) They have NOT stayed at their vacation ranch while people drowned in New Orleans like...someoene.

5.) They have NOT banned the media from showing pictures of coffins coming back from Iraq like...someone.

Sometimes it's not what you do, it's what you don't do. And is two years really fair to compare two years in one branch of government to six years of dominance in all three branches, plus another 12 where Republicans dominated two of the three?
