Since the advent of the Internet chat forum I've spent countless hours discussing deep issues like whether or not
Motley Crue and
Ratt qualify as hair metal (further research required), if
Deep Purple was better than
Led Zeppelin (no way), or if
Eric Clapton is overrated (he is) with my fellow middle-aged crazies. Similar arguments occur between those passionate about politics and sports, and there are radio formats dedicated to their interests. A co-worker at the old Kinko's, a massive
Beatles fanatic, once posited the idea there should be a radio show dedicated to the deep discussion of music.
My old pal Geoff may have beaten that Beatles fan to the punch, and I'm hoping he succeeds. Geoff and his friend Justin have rekindled a partnership that began at
96 Rock here in Atlanta with their new Web site and podcasts that bring a sports talk attitude to rock 'n' roll discussion. They're using the self-descriptive moniker they used overnights at 96, "
The Frustrated Rockstars."
Their first podcast is currently up on their MySpace page and also
their new Web site. The topic of the first podcast is reunions, since 2007 saw a lot of them, and I think the Van Halen part is particularly good stuff (although I can't believe Geoff thinks Van Hagar was on par with Van Halen. Is he nuts?!). In short order the timing should get better, and the Web site will probably also get jazzier.
Geoff has gone as far as quitting the Clear Channel cluster to focus on this. I thought that seemed rash, but maybe they'll have him back for syndication if this works on the Internet(s).
Eddie Trunk out of New York has had some success on the radio playing to the sensibilities of 30-to-50 year old classic rock fans, and I think Geoff and Justin's debate format could bring extra life to the concept.
They may be Frustrated Rockstars for life, but I'm not sure they'll be frustrated
radio stars for much longer.
