Hard-working, God-fearing Businessman

A business is successful because it provides the best-quality products and service at the best prices, right? Maybe not. What if a business succeeds through scamming bullshit?

Today I was talking to a co-worker who previously worked at MCI selling phone service. He said, "Each manager would give you a script that they thought would sell, and you went by that script. Ours would say, 'Your MCI service has been interrupted. We just need to verify your account information (to create an order with) to get it re-connected.' And most of these people had never even had MCI service! But you're calling everybody: old people, retards.

"After awhile they did away with the drug screening, and some of the people who turned up looked like hoodlums; drug dealers. They would wind up having the best sales. I didn't have the stomach for it and left."

You might think this guy is full of crap and I would, too, except I did an interview several years ago at the very call center he was talking about and witnessed it. They put me with their top seller to see how it was done. This girl, who had a accent just like the actress Rosie Perez, was calling people at 9 a.m. and they would answer the phone sounding very sleepy, obviously having just woken up. She started talking 100 m.p.h. like she was trying to sell them Gucci watches from under a raincoat on the street corner. Everytime they even offered a grunt of protest she launched back in faster and louder. I said wow, you just steamroll right over `em, huh? She said, "You're not supposed to give them time to think about it. That's what they teach you in class." Or as the guy I was talking to said, "They said one 'no' wasn't enough, you had to get five."

Now I use MCI's name for a reason, so that you understand this wasn't some small-time, chump-change company. This is a mainstream American corporation, as big as they come.

At the call center I work at now we're one step up on this food chain. One group elsewhere calls people at home to sell cell service, DSL, etc. Once they get their phone they call us and we do a sort of clean-up. "They didn't tell you about that activation fee? Well I'm sorry to hear that and do apologize. They told you the phone was free? Oh, it isn't, and I do apologize, but it sure is nice to have around..." My co-workers complain about the dishonest salespeople but I think they're missing the larger picture: the salespeople are to lie and say whatever it takes to get a phone into your mailbox, then we're supposed to sweet talk and "I do apologize" enough that hopefully you'll hang onto it even after you find out you've been scammed.

Rich people are rich because they provide quality products and services at the best possible price. Our society would be nowhere without them.

Great piece Art, except for the little "dig" at the end...but you're an angry young man.

Part of my job as an admin assistant is to staff the reception desk. We get an unbelievable number of telemarketing calls.

It's amazing to me in this day and age that there are still people gullible enough to blindly purchase products and services from people on the phone.

By the same token, I get a little angry that people continue to bring more little telemarketers into the world each and every day.

It's just like "Spam" e-mail. For every 1,000 people who realize it's a scam, there's the one lunkhead who says "Wow, only $200 to prolong my erections for a half hour? What a deal."

If people are stupid enough to be a telemarketer or purchase something from a telemarketer, that's their problem/affair/business.

Rich people aren't the problem.

Nic Cage just donated $2 million to servicemen, and Liz Taylor donated a full hospital on wheels to New Orleans.

Research centers would be nowhere without hefty donations. There are entire wings named after big donors... successful business people of each political party. Look at Warren Buffett and Bill Gates in the news. Maybe someday we'll see the Marshall Mathers Psychiatric Wing at Bellevue!

This story though sounds a little like spec spots where they want the client to "take ownership" of the ad, provide script changes and everything. Actually, no money or promises are exchanged. Which kind of makes the MCI people look ethically challenged. At least a store can say we love the spot, but we're not going to buy at this time, thanks.

There's something wrong when radio is the respectable choice out of two examples.

But look at who he said you're calling: old people (senile, Alzheimer's) and retards. They're intentionally taking advantage of these people. Are you going to say, "If that one-legged man couldn't outrun my truck he should keep his ass off the sidewalk?"
