American Idol 5/10/2006

Yeah, I know few of my readers care about American Idol but I love it, so here's a review of last night's show.
The flotsam has burned off and we're down to the Final Four on American Idol. It's a bit of an embarrassment that I couldn't tell you who made the Final Four in "hoops" but I know exactly who the Final Four are on American Idol. Mandisa should still be there but oh, well, what can you do?
It was Elvis week and Mariah Carey's ex-husband and Sony Records head Tommy Mattolla met the kids at Graceland to offer them marginal singing advice. I think Tommy Mattolla knows how to read a recording contract but probably zero about how to actually make music. It also sounds like salt-and-pepper-haired Taylor Hicks may have hit it off with Elvis Presley's spawn, Lisa Marie Presley.
The youngsters sang Elvis tunes this week. Here's how they stacked up:
Elliot Yamin - This guy...he's likable, he sings great sometimes, but overall the tone of his voice is too dry to me. He always sounds like he needs a glass of hot herbal tea with some honey in it to warm that throat up. I would have had him going home, but DialIdol.com has him near the top. Hmm...
Chris Daughtry - "Daughtry" sounds like "Daltrey," but I can't see this guy fronting the Who. The judges love him, the audience loves him, but to me he sounds like everybody I hear on 99X these days. That same three-note midrange voice that has been the rage in rock since Eddie Vedder. To my ears this guy, hailed as such a great "rocker," failed to put any rock into Elvis Presley. DialIdol.com has him on the bottom this week but I find it hard to believe, he's had such a fan base from the beginning. We'll see.
Katharine McPhee - Kathraine just shows up and she "stacks" up...heh heh...get it? Me neither. Anyhow, where Katharine is always lacking is...it seems like she has the classic Pretty Girl Syndrome. Because she's flawless physically (check out those booty shots! Yow!) there has to be something flawed somewhere and...she sings every song with a smile like she's in a beauty pageant, and something about her seems a little spacey. I get the feeling her mom raised her under a glass in a temperature-controlled environment, and that's why she has no hardships to relate any of these songs to. But the same could be said of Faith Hill who's one of the biggest stars ever, so...The judges inexplicably hammer Katharine every week and so do the teen girls who call (or don't call) to vote.
Taylor Hicks - "Taylor you are...safe!" Taylor Hicks has only been out of the top slot on DialIdol.com once, and he's the only contestant to never have touched the bottom three, or bottom two. He's running on a momentum he created early on. His audition was great, his entrance was great when he went to the theater to hear if he made it onto the show or not (came in playing harmonica as though he hadn't a care in the world). His vocal performances since have been below what I would have expected for him, but as I say, he got his momentum long ago. He's country yet quirky like a guy I knew a few years ago, and so he gets a pass in my book every time.
Tonight on FOX at 9 p.m. your time...we find out what happens! I'm gonna say...it's gotta be Elliot or Katharine, although DialIdol.com says Chris. Your thoughts? |

It is great though when it turns someone's fortunes around, like Fantasia or Clay Aiken. (no Clay Aiken jokes)
