I'm an Old Man Again

I'm getting back to some of my original "old man" thoughts on this MP3 player thing. I went to Wal Mart to buy an adapter it so I could use it in the car. There are only two kinds of adapters available, and one of them requires that your car still have a cassette player. Since my car has a CD player, I got the other kind, which transmits the MP3 player to your car stereo. It sounds like shit! It sounds like a low-watt college FM station that broadcasts in mono and is getting out of range.

I read all the time about people using their MP3 player in their car. Are they driving around with earbuds? Or paying another $200 for a stereo to use with their MP3 player? How are you doing this?

Both my truck and the missus' car have cassette players, so we use that sort of adapter.

Many newer car stereos have an mp3 plug-in on the face panel. Folks also use those to retro-fit satellite radio systems.

I have heard similar stories about those transmitters being total shit at best.

I checked out some new car stereos. The cheapest thing out there is $80 at Wal Mart, which is just $50 more than what I paid for this shitty FM transmitter thing. The interfaces on the new stereos look like they would be complicated to use while you were trying to steer, though. Plus I hate to toss out this stereo since it still works. Maybe I won't retire the CD wallet for the car just yet.

The FM transmitters are crap. Sounds like AM radio.

I'm gonna bite the bullet soon and buy a stereo with an MP3 plug in.

Dude, you gotta look at ALpine's new direct plug-in head units for iPod. I bought a low-end model for about $150 at Best Buy. It has a wire adapter ($30 extra), that plugs into the bottom connector of the iPod, so everything is digital and direct. The iPod sits in the glove box, and you control it from the head unit. I just set it on a playlist and hit random play. The sound is awesome, no more noise or hiss, and the amp section is actually decent. I have stock speakers in my Tacoma, and they sound really good. (I'm an acoustics engineer, so I'm not just blowin' smoke up the ol' crack!)
