Back to the Future? No, the Past.

Life moves fast. If you don't look around, you might miss it.I'm wondering if I did the right thing. I wandered around the used DVD store with three movies in my hand for a long time, thinking maybe I should put them down and go home and think about it. Unfortunately it was raining like hell so I couldn't escape, so I just kept walking and looking at the covers. The movies were Strange Brew (used but mint for $5.99), Fast Times at Ridgemont High (used but mint for $7.99) and Ferris Bueller's Day Off (totally new, $8.99).

Of course as I held them I thought, "Here I am doing just what Scott said, being stuck between 1986 and 1996." Okay, so let's get with the times and survey the more contemporary offerings. Hmm...there's a Larry the Cable Guy concert. "Git-r-done!," says Larry! Oh, my sides are aching from laughter! How about The Dukes of Hazzard with Jessica Simpson? I bet any aspect of that movie I'd be interested in is already posted on YouTube. Let's see...oh, here we go! All the seasons of Smallville are out on DVD! Let me grab my credit card!

No, there was nothing around that was going to compete with the ol' `80's classics, but...how likely is it I'm really going to dedicate another hour-and-a-half or two hours to movies I could practically mouth the words to anyhow?

I bought `em, but I remain uncertain if this was a good move. Maybe it was. Anyhow...what are some post-1996 things I'm missing out on? Anything? Anything? Bueller? Bueller? Frye? Frye?

Post-1996? The only thing that springs to mind is Titanic, which is worth picking up if only for the shots of Kate Winslet's jugs.

are you serious?

I'm in my mid 30s ( a real lady never tells!)and there's still good fare to be had.

comedies? 'There's something about Mary' compares with any comedy from that time.

Drama: Titanic.

War films? Saving private Ryan.

the list of decent movies and music goes on and on. Granted, there does seem to be alot more pablum, but that could be from our jaded view. Maybe there was just as much crap as before..Before Grunge came out, remember how bad the Hair Bands were?

Good deals on the DVD's, though!

Oh, yeah, I've seen There's Something About Mary two or three times. I don't know if it's something I would buy, though. Saving Private Ryan didn't come close to my expectations except for the scene where the troop carrier hits the shore. For a drama Good Will Hunting, Forrest Gump, Shawshank Redemption and The Sixth Sense are some of my favorite movies of all time. However...those are all still from about 1996, maybe `99. What's come out since 2000? I have a theory George Bush, Jr. ruined the movie business, too, but I haven't ironed out the details.

Yeah, didn't he send an 'envoy' out to Hollywood to 'have a stern talking-to' with some studio heads?:-)

When was 'the Usual Suspects' done?

The Usual Suspects -- another movie I rented, watched 15 minutes, and rewound. Lots of whispering and mumbling with no action or plot? (That was about `94 or `95.)

This thread is revealing something very interesting: most everyone in their mid-30's, not just me, follows pop culture up to about `97 or `98 and then we lose track!

I watched Ferris Bueller Saturday night, and I'm glad I got that after all. It was quite refreshing to see, actually. Truly a classic premise and lines that still kill me. I think I'll write something about that.
