Job or Jail?: Trouble Logging In

Awhile back I criticized the Redacted blog. You know what that guy should do if he REALLY wants some readers? Try posting some stories about how shitty his job is. People love it! Don't they?

Is it a job or is it jail?

Sunday morning I returned to work after being out a few days and tried to log in to my computer. They had switched out the CPU's and changed some things in the network and I couldn't log in. Seconds were ticking by and I needed to punch in, so I went to the desk of a co-worker who worked a later shift and signed in under my ID and e-mailed the manager on duty, Wilhelm Malveux, about what was going on. I tried logging in at my desk again just to double check, then looked around to see if they had set up the new desk and computer they were supposed to set up for me while I was gone, and they hadn't. So I went back to the co-worker's desk and now I had to sit and wait for each program to re-install, then change several passwords. After 15 or 20 minutes I was finally up and running.

Two or three hours went by, then I got the following e-mail from Wilhelm Malveux:

Thank you for the update.

I saw you in unavailable at 8:04 a.m., then you were logged out.

May I ask why you didn't stay logged in and available on the other computer, or at least come find me?

At 9:12 a.m., I saw you walking around.

May I ask what happened?

Thank you,

Wilhelm Malveaux, Jr.
Customer Operations Manager

Does the accusatory tone of this e-mail sound like it would be merited by a 38-year-old college graduate with no credit card debt and no unpaid traffic tickets, or does it sound like something you would expect to see at a juvenile detention center?

Wilhelm Malveaux is this swishy gay black guy who's six years younger than me and one of the most widely-disliked people in the call center. Notice he calls himself a "Customer Operations Manager." I'm not sure that's even a actual title within the company or if he made that up; he used to answer the phone as "Wilhelm Malveaux, manager" even when he was far from being a manager.

I didn't even reply to this horseshit, but here's what I would have like to have said:

May I ask why you begin every sentence with "may I ask why?" And as long as you're asking, no, you may not ask why. Why would you need to? I already e-mailed you and told you what the issue was. There was no one else in this room at 8:00 a.m. except me and you, so if you had any further questions about what was happening you could've come over and offered to help instead of just sitting there covertly taking notes. Did I say go fuck yourself already? If not, I'm saying it now.

By 10:30 a.m. the rest of the crew came in, and guess what? EVERYBODY had problems logging in! Now Wilhelm got his scrawny ass over there and actually tried to help, and I stood up right in front of him and shook my fingers at everybody else, "Look at all of you, faking computer problems so you can stay off the phones and loaf! YOU DISGUST ME!"

This isn't a one-off incident, either. I'll tell you the next story of harassment by the guards in the pen, er, I mean the call center, later.

Too many chiefs (some self-appointed) and not enough indians with any sense.

So what did this guy expect from you? Seems to me the mandate of Fitzsimmons is to harass and run employees off once they reach a certain pay grade.

When I worked for Shithole Company, there were several call cues coming into the call center.

The team leader of the LostCauseCo cue asked me if I would help them on occasions where they were shorthanded, and I said sure, why not.

Well the manager of the LostCauseCo cue wasn’t very good at managing her staff and frequently let her buddies leave early. So one night at 9pm, I was inundated with calls. I did the best I could until 9:59, and when I saw that fat heifer heading for the door with a dozen calls holding, I turned off my phone and let the other couple of LostCauseCo reps handle it.

Man, she was pissed. The numbers for the hold times were off the chart. And she asked why I left with calls holding. I told her that my end time was 10pm and when she let all of her people leave, she could bet that I wasn’t staying over to help, especially when she was waddling toward the door herself.

The useless bitch.

Are we just "spoiled" because we're only children and we don't understand that you're supposed to let the rest of the world shit in your face? Is that it? Is this "normal" and it's us who have the problem because we don't like being talked down to and jerked around?

Right, I had told this guy there was a issue with the computer right away. I got logged on to one and was ready to work. He mentions I was "walking around" at 9:15 a.m. Yeah, I probably walked around the corner 40 ft. to go pee. Did that hurt anything?

Just wait until Wednesday's story. It's a real corker.

How am I not a big star with material like this?

How rude, you should learn from your boss...and say "May I ask you to go fuck yourself?"

I have worked in a ton of different settings, and I am always amazed at the criteria management uses to identify candidates for promotion. Generally, it involves dicks. Either they are one, or they sucked the right one.

Having said that, I am a manager where I work, never have sucked one, so I guess I am one.

Get out of where you work. Just saying your supervisor's name out loud makes me want to punch him.

Thank you, Kimba! Actually I made that name up for him, but it sounds very close to his real name. The guy's demeanor is somewhere between the butler on "Silver Spoons" and Mr. Hand from "Fast Times at Ridgemont High," if you can imagine that. Maybe it's not the same everywhere, but after this place I have to look sideways at anyone who aspires to management. It seems like the job is mostly about being petty and malevolent.
