Art's Reading Room: "Growing Up Metal"

If you liked hard rock and metal back in the 1980's, and I think every white heterosexual male over 30 did, you'll enjoy Don's blog entry (photo left), "Growing Up Metal." He capsulizes the whole experience in just a few paragraphs. This part about his first day in 10th grade in Atlanta is particularly charming:

"I walked in terrified and right away found my tribe. A table of really bad hair, bad skin and black t-shirts. These were my people."

I can't say I was ever as deep into it as Don was, but I was there just the same, at a different high school on the north side of town, in my black concert tees going to see Cinderella, Van Halen, Aerosmith, Tesla and David Lee Roth (and Don's right, Cinderella put on a hell of a great live show, as did Tesla). There was a tribal thing about it when you went to a concert back then. There might be only a thimblefull of people like you in your own high school, but when you put on your T-shirt and entered the lobby of the Omni, there were 14,999 more like you from all over town. It was a great experience.

So take a read of Don's blog, and keep one foot in the gutter, one fist in the gold*.

* Anyone who was really there won't have to think for a split second about where that last line came from.
