There is now a nice selection of Zen videos for the world to peruse on the World Wide Web. Let's start with a peak performance with our original singer, Rick Peregrine, from a 1990 high school talent show. Townshend, Daltrey, Moon and Entwistle had nothing on our version of "Summertime Blues!" Especially where bizarre jumping around was concerned.
Due to the usual circumstances -- marriage -- our first singer unceremoniously cut his hair and dumped us. He was all of 20 years old, and was dropping out of college to get married and go to work on the repair counter at Micro Center for $8 an hour. Now he makes somewhere over $100,000 a year as a IT manager for a Fortune 500 company. Clearly he made a horrible decision.
So we auditioned and auditioned singers for another year, and came across our second singer. He was just 16 years old, but we immediately started playing more prestigious shows after he came aboard. In fact, we won a battle of the bands with him on our very first outing in May of 1992. If you have 10 minutes you might want to watch this video:
Hey, do you wanna see me get my ass kicked? I know some of you do, but I don't mean in the literal, fisticuffs sense. I mean this kid who played Joe Satriani covers in the high school talent show. He beat us. I've rarely ran across anyone who played this well since. Just my luck I'd find myself competing with Vito Bratta, Jr. at the high school talent show!
