Rock n' Roll Red Alerts!

I haven't been this excited about Christmas in years. Yesterday I got two fantastic bits of rock n' roll news.

First, AC/DC has just released a three-DVD set of rehearsal video and live footage from the Bon Scott era all the way through to today. It's called Plug Me In. Just last weekend I picked up their DVD Family Jewels and enjoyed it quite a bit, though most of it was them lip-synching on various Australian American Bandstand-type TV shows and MTV videos. (There's also a glitch in the video on "Flick of the Switch," too, at least with my DVD player; it plays fine on the computer). This new set sounds like just what I wanted. Now I just wish they'd put the old Bon Scott concert movie Let There Be Rock out on DVD. I understand it has this one part where Angus Young stamps his feet back and forth while banging his head. No, wait...that's every second of every video they ever did.

And then there's more, even bigger news. Back when the Led Zeppelin two-DVD set came out I read an interview where they asked Jimmy Page if it made The Song Remains the Same obsolete. He said, "We have some plans for that that I think will be very surprising." I knew then that I should be on the lookout for a dream edition of TSRTS.

It's here! Or it will be November 20th. They're reissuing the staple of my high school and college Friday and Saturday nights in a set with the complete concert (the original only had about 1/3 of the show) and remastered sound. There will also be a three-disc soundtrack album, or you can get it all together in a special package that includes a T-shirt and mock tour programs for just $30. For that price, who could refuse?! I'll be really curious to see if they kept the fantasy sequences a lot of Amazon.com reviewers bemoan.

I just can't wait. How nice to know you can still get excited about Christmas even when you're nearly 40!
