I Am a Winner!

E-Bay is an insidious invention. Every doodad you ever vaguely thought you would like to own is there on your desktop, available for purchase with the push of a button, day and night.
And this is why I just won an auction for an MXR Phase 90 "Script" footpedal. This pedal makes the guitar have a slow, hypnotic wobbly sound that was very widely-employed in the 1970's by everyone from Waylon Jennings (think the "Luckenbach, Texash" riff) to Stevie Wonder to Edward Van Halen.
Of special note here is the word "script". MXR's first pedals featured a very `70's script typeface. Later they changed to a more modernistic "block" logo, and the circuitry inside the pedals changed, also. It's the opinion of virtually everyone I've read on the Internet that the change was not for the better. The wobble became too pronounced in the block logos, they say, and so the script logo MXR pedals are highly prized. I've tried a current block logo MXR and thought it sounded great. However, when I saw a Custom Shop script model reissue going for $74.99 with free shipping, well...the custom shop script ones usually sell for $110 on a good day, and this is in the original box with all the paperwork, new! So what could I do but bid? So I got it for $81.50.
I'm also trying to snag a DOD phaser that usually goes for about $30 but offers more control over the sound, and then I want to A/B them. I want to see if I can dial in the Phase 90 script phaser sound on the DOD.
While I'm thrilled, I'm also frightened I'm turning into one of those little old ladies who plays video poker at the convenience store one day on a whim, and the next thing you know she's having her mail delivered there. |
