That's Not Bush's Fault: September 11th

Another blog entry in less than a week! We continue our countdown to Election `06 with our look at things that, despite all appearances and logic, were not George Bush Jr.'s fault.

As millions of people like me who were put out of work at the start of the Bush reign sat around in our pajamas on Tuesday, September 11, 2001, the United States changed forever. I was tuned into the Regular Guys show when they announced that a small plane had crashed into one of the World Trade Centers, then another private jet crashed into the other tower. The initial thinking was that these were little Piper planes and one had lost it's way due to the smoke from the first crash and had its own collision. The Regular Guys went to their helicopter traffic reporter and asked him wouldn't air traffic control be able to talk them around a crash like that? Not if they meant to crash, was his reply. One of the Regular Guys said that was too close to be a coincidence and it slowly dawned on us all that something was going on. These turned out to not be small planes but the biggest airliners around.

One month earlier a memo had circulated at the White House which Condoleeza Rice recalled was titled "Osama bin Laden Determined to Strike Inside the United States." Our wise leader was busy resting up on vacation at his ranch in Crawford, Texas, as he was for 40% of his first year in office, and did not return to read this memo. In fact Richard Clark, who had been "terror czar" for every president from Reagan to Clinton, has said he tried to get the attention of many in the Bush administration about the gathering terrorist threat and was shrugged off. (Bill Clinton asserts Clarke was even demoted, Rice says he left after he didn't get a promotion he wanted.)

George H. Bush, the president's father, was meeting with the family of Osama bin Laden in New York the very day of the attacks on business. The family was flown out of New York shortly thereafter on a private plane at the command of the White House (Google on this and you'll find it. It's not a conspiracy theory, it's well-documented). No one from the bin Laden family was held up for even the briefest questioning, just like how the families of rape and murder suspects are never asked when and where they last saw their close relative*.

It's easy to point fingers, especially at those who had blown off meetings and ignored memos with the words and "bin Laden" and "attack" in the headlines. Yeah, yeah, you liberal pussies, I know what you're thinking...but it's not Bush's fault! The ultimate fall guy in this caper was the director of the CIA, that Italian guy (I would Google his name but I'm on a super-slow dial-up). So there you have it. Not Bush's fault again, it was the CIA's. Glad we cleared that up. Right?

* A reminder there may be sarcasm in some of these entries.
