Surverying the Aftermath

Barack Obama and his creepy new Chief of Staff, Rahm Emanuel

Usually on Friday I try to write about something light, either hot chicks or classic rock news. However because this was a week that decided the next four years of our country and the world, we'll survey the aftermath of Election 2008.

Where Now, Sarah Palin?

I'm surprised I'm even writing about Sarah Palin right now. I figured by 2 p.m. November 5th Sarah Palin would enter the "where are they now?" file. But instead, the reports are still coming in that unidentified McCain advisers are piling on with derogatory rumors and innuendo about the governor.

Does she have a future on the national political stage? I think she could. The GOP might be giving her a big present of public sympathy, because weeks before it came true I was reading speculation that Palin would be the scapegoat if/when the McCain campaign lost. She may be seen as the new Colin Powell, the loyal soldier who got rolled over by the tank of Republican ambition. This could work for her image as a reformer: "The good ol' boys of the RNC tried to knock this girl down in 2008, and that's why I'm coming back to show `em in `12!" With it established she wasn't part of that Republican party, she could then show off four years of intense, Ivy League-level study of world history and policy, spewing streams of Bill Clinton-like analysis, "proving" that Katy Couric was nothing but a tool of the "liberal media" who will be kept on their toes by this new, sharpened Palin.

The Barracuda shoots, she scores.

Rahm Emanuel: I'm Already Getting Creeped Out

The TV images during and after Barack Obama's speech were nothing short of awing. Onlooker's faces said this was more than an election being won, we were entering a new era of world unity and accessing our highest selves. And it wasn't just happening in Chicago, the images were coming in from Sydney, Australia, from Beijing, China and Paris, France. "A New World Dawns," said the cover of London's Daily Mirror.

And then Obama announced Rahm Emanuel as his Chief of Staff. I didn't know anything about this guy, but he looked shifty on first sight. Then I read about him: he's from Chicago, too...and missing a finger. Okay, this is starting to sound bad. He also is known for being loud and verbally abusive, doing things like mailing people dead fish and stabbing a knife into a table and calling out the names of party "betrayers;" what an ideal pick by the Illinois Prince of Peace.

Oh, well...this is still better than John McCain's first days would've been, I guess. Maybe I'm rushing to judgment. We'll see how it goes.

I think we could have done worse than Emanuel, it could have been Duval Patrick. At least all Emanuel has to do is run herd over an all-Dem majority.

The rumor I have been hearing is the McCain campaign people smelled defeat BEFORE picking Palin. They had conference meetings about when to tell McCain he was about to lose again.

Palin in 2012? Bring it on. There is no way she can build on what she already is. And that ain't enough.

I kinda wondered about this. "We're gonna get creamed. What bright-eyed wanna-be can we wheel in to be our scapegoat when it's all over?" Although I think they were sincerely hopeful she would turn their fortunes. I know I was afraid; it was clear she would be a big hit with some of my Republican friends here in the South. I do wonder if she isn't damaged goods from here on out, though. TIME.com has a good article about this right now.
