Educational Options

Someone already told me, "Don't get into Web site design. Everybody and his brother does that. Much like with music, if it's fun it probably doesn't pay much." There's just no way I can focus on something dry and boring, though. When I read about something like MySQL databases, I can't even finish the course description before my mind wanders! So I may as well look into Web site design.

Here are the options:

  • Kennesaw State is a more impressive name and has a certificate program that is $800 cheaper, but Chattahoochee Tech's certificate program is more comprehensive.

  • Chattahoochee Tech offers a Associate's degree in Web design, but that would take awhile and it looks like it might require classes I've already had years ago for my Bachelor's. However, maybe I could count those classes towards this degree. I have a feeling they'll find some reason I need to pay them more money for new classes, though.

  • I also investigated a Master's in Computer Science at Kennesaw State, but part-time that could take me 2 1/2 years.
I'm leaning strongly towards a certificate, but what do my wise reader(s) think?

Art, I have an associates in Information Systems & Network Administration. This got my foot in the door for a job at UNC when we lived in NC but all in all, it's experience they want. I know more people that work in IT with English degrees than anything. Not one lick of schooling in IT. That's why I think the certificate programs might be best. Less time involved and enough to get you in the door entry level and since you already have a bachelors, that's another foot in. I've found that most don't care what your degree was in, as long as you have one and SOMETHING to do with technology.

That's my 2 cents my friend!
